Tales from the Jayhawks Hardwood: Second Edition

By: Mark Stallard.

One of the most storied and radition-rich basketball programs in America, the Kansas Jayhawks have produced many basketball legends-coaches and players alike. From their humble beginnings of playing in the basement of Snow Hall to the raucous atmosphere of Allen Fieldhouse, the Jayhawks have been a national powerhouse on the hardwood almost from the start. Kansas has been home to many great coaches, from the "Father of Basketball Coaching" Forrest C. "Phog" Allen, who successfully motivated his players with unorthodox methods, to current coach Bill Self, who took over for Roy Williams and will undoubtedly make his mark in Lawrence. Die-hard fans have cheered some of the game's greatest players through the decades-Wilt Chamberlain, Jo Jo White, Clyde Lovelette, and Danny Manning-and are anxious to see what becomes of recent stars like Drew Gooden and Wayne Simien. Tales from the Jayhawks Hardwood: Second Edition is an updated and revised collection of first-hand memories from the players and coaches who made history at the University of Kansas. Random Kinds Of Factness: 1001 (or So) Absolutely True Tidbits About (mostly) Everything

By: Erin Barrett, Jack Mingo.

This latest romp through history, politics, religion, and science from the dyno-duo Barrett and Mingo is sure to tickle the fancy of trivia buffs everywhere. Amuse your date, impress your boss, bore your kids, or be the 6th caller to win a pair of tickets to the nose-flute band concert! All because you know that a Twinkie in the microwave will explode in 45 seconds, that you have a 1 in 3,448,276 chance of dying from a snake bite, that 342 cases of tea were tossed into the "hahbah" during the Boston Tea Party or that white rhinoceroses are not actually white but grey (you'll have to read the book to discover why). Barrett and Mingo, partners in life and crime (er, writing) can do a thing or two with random facts, and this book ranks right up there. From the time the Wallace family made famous books of lists of one kind or another, readers have found fascination--or maybe just food for their obsessions--in books like Random Kinds of Factness.

Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph

By: C. Vivian Stringer, Laura Tucker.

“Lots of people have dreams, but C. Vivian Stringer is the dream—a coalminer’s daughter who believed when her Poppa told her there was no obstacle she could not surmount. And she lives that dream, teaching others to rise up to meet challenges, turning underdogs into champions again and again—on and off the court. This is the quintessential American story, of a woman and of a family pulling together against the odds. Standing Tall offers an important message of hope to so many.”
—John Chaney, Hall of Fame college basketball coach

At a time when heroes are too rare, C. Vivian Stringer sets a shining example. She has time and again shown character, fortitude, and heart, both on and off the hardwood, and in the face of unbearable loss. In Standing Tall, she shares her remarkable life story, inspiring us to find this fortitude within ourselves.

“Work hard, and don’t look for excuses,” Stringer’s parents told her, “and you can achieve anything.” But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times. A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-white cheerleading squad in the sixties. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her fourteen-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically black college to the national championships—a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill—her staunchest supporter, the father of her children, and the love of her life—fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four. Through these dark times and others—including her bout with cancer, shared here for the first time—Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.

Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story—love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last page.

Jayber Crow

By: Wendell Berry.

For thirty-nine years Wendell Berry has brought us stories from the fictional town of Port William, Kentucky. The latest, Jayber Crow, is the story of a man's love for his community and his abiding and unrequited love for Mattie Chatham, a good woman who had too early made one bad mistake. Sent to an orphanage at the age of ten, Jayber grows up knowing of loneliness and want, and learns how to be a watchful observer of human goodness and frailty. With the flood of 1937 he returns to his native Port William to become the town's barber. Slowly, patiently, the observer becomes participant. This is a book about Heaven, writes Jayber, but I must say too that it has been a close call. For I have wondered sometimes if it would not finally turn out to be a book about Hell-where we fail to love one another, where we hate and destroy one another for reasons abundantly provided or for righteousness' sake or for pleasure, where we destroy the things we need the most, where we see no hope and have no faith...where we must lose everything to know what we have had.Sounding themes of love and loss, despair and deepest joy, Berry's clear-sighted artistry in depicting the Port William membership will not soon be forgotten.

Jeremy Lin Knee Injury - Six Weeks Rehab
(Resharing) - Claim no Rights NEW YORK -- Jeremy Lin will have left knee surgery next week and will miss six weeks, likely ending his amazing breakthrough season. The New York Knicks said Saturday their point guard had an MRI exam this week that revealed a small, chronic meniscus tear. With the regular season ending April 26, the biggest story in basketball this season is probably done regardless of whether the Knicks make the playoffs. He was barely holding on to a place in the NBA back in February. Now, after the back-to-back Sports Illustrated covers and popularity around the world, he has to go back to the bench when he wants to play most. "If this was done very early in the year, obviously ... I don't know where my career would be. I could be, would be definitely without a job and probably fighting for a summer league spot," Lin said. "But having said that, this happening now hurts just as much, because all the players, we really put our heart and souls into the team and into the season, and to not be there when it really matters most is hard."
